Stephanie and Ranbor from UBC SIFE

For those who was here on Mar 14 to listen Tom Smith's speech on CRCID (you may read the story by click on this link). Tom mentioned that his club is associated with Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) at BCIT and they have a rewarding experience supporting the group of youth. Today we have Stephanie (incoming VP) and Ranbor (incoming president) talk about their club SIFE at UBC.

Stephanie Fan, the incoming vice president for UBC SIFE and Ranbor Li, the incoming president gave the Club an overview of the Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) and their club. SIFE’s mission is “to bring together the top leaders of today and tomorrow to create a better, more sustainable world through the positive power of business”. It is an international non-profit organization that works with leaders in business and higher education to mobilize university students to make a difference in their communities while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders.
Participating students form teams on their university campuses and apply business concepts to develop outreach projects that improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need. An annual series of regional and national competitions provides a forum for teams to present the results of their projects, and to be evaluated by business leaders serving as judges.
National champion teams advance to the prestigious SIFE World Cup.
The UBC SIFE currently has 4 projects:-
1) BizKit – an educational program for high school students to learn about business in general
2) Spend It Right – an educational program for high school students with more in-depth topics such as business ethics and social responsibility of corporations
3) Let’s Can Hunger – a program to fight hunger, focuses more on long lasting results on the ability for the poor to feed themselves rather than feeding them with a separate competition sponsored by Campbell’s
4) Reach Out – helping start-up non-profit organizations, currently they are working with an organization helping handicapped children on their branding and image
6 differences between UBC SIFE and other business clubs in universities:-
1) UBC SIFE runs projects instead of events
2) Every member is hired through interview to ensure there is no deadweights
3) Plan, execute and report on all projects with participation from all members and external organizations
4) Fundamentally interdisciplinary with members from different faculties
5) Representing Sauder externally and internationally
6) Intercollegiate collaboration with SIFE in other universities such as SFU and BCIT locally UBC SIFE would like the Club to consider supporting them on their projects to enable them to expand their projects and start new projects. In return they will focus more in Richmond and work with high schools locally. They are working with Steveston London currently as Stephanie was a past Interact member. They will also provide reports and updates on projects and the Club will be invited to the annual donor recognition event with logo on their competition marketing material.
They are having an event on April 26 where members can go and learn more about UBC SIFE and the national competition in Calgary which their team will be going to in May. A formal invitation with more information will be emailed to Youth Program Coordinator David.
President Wei noted the Club will has a meeting to discuss about the sponsorship opportunity and David will notify them of the result.
